The axial piston motor consists of a cylinder block with several pistons arranged in a circular pattern around a central driveshaft. The piston heads are angled so that they form a "swash plate" that is connected to the driveshaft.

The cylinder block is mounted in a housing that contains ports for hydraulic fluid. When pressurized hydraulic fluid is directed into the ports, it enters the cylinder block, pushing the pistons outward and causing the swash plate to tilt.
